Matthew 26:6-13
Jesus Anointed at Bethany
6 While Jesus was in Bethany in the home of Simon the Leper, 7 a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head as he was reclining at the table.
8 When the disciples saw this, they were indignant. “Why this waste?” they asked. 9 “This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor.”
10 Aware of this, Jesus said to them, “Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 11 The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have me. 12 When she poured this perfume on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial. 13 Truly I tell you, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”
- "Simon the Leper" - this was his nickname...but now hosting Royalty, "The King of Kings"
- Nicknames are an association of your identity-
- You are no longer judged by your past, you have a New Name!
2 Corinthians 5:17 "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!"
- New identity in Christ: "___(your name)___ the Forgiven", "___(your name)____the Child of God..."
- You are Brand New!
"The Devil knows your name but calls you by your sin... God knows your sin but calls you by your name!"
He Knows Your Name!!
"What she has done will also be told in memory of her!"
1. Extravagant Love
- She took the most precious thing she owned and poured it out on Jesus - Wow!
- The alabaster jar of oil was worth about 300 denari which was a whole year's wages - enough to feed 5,000!
- She gave her all!
- Way past common sense - the disciples thought it was a waste
- Still being talked about today!
2. She prepared and obeyed the call to worship sacrificially!
- She broke the jar!
- It would never be used for any other purpose
- Broken and poured out for Him!
Am I Broken & Spilled out for Jesus?
Have I surrendered All?
Am I willing to sacrifice all to serve Jesus exclusively>
Broken & Spilled Out (lyrics)
One day a plain village woman
Driven by love for her Lord
Recklessly poured out a valuable essence
Disregarding the scorn
And once it was broken and spilled out
A fragrance filled all the room
Like a pris'ner released from his shackles
Like a spirit set free from the tomb
Broken and spilled out
Just for love of you Jesus
My most precious treasure
Lavished on Thee
Broken and spilled out
And poured at Your feet
In sweet abandon
Let me be spilled out
And used up for Thee
Lord You were God's precious treasure
His loved and His own perfect Son
Sent here to show me
The love of the Father
Just for love it was done
And though You were perfect and holy
You gave up Yourself willingly
You spared no expense for my pardon
You were used up and wasted for me
Broken and spilled out
Just for love of me Jesus
God's most precious treasure
Lavished on me
You were broken and spilled out
And poured at my feet
In sweet abandon Lord
You were spilled out and used up for Me
In sweet abandon, let me be spilled out
And used up for Thee
