"Consumed"

-Pastor Ben Kellert, Sunday, September 21, 2025

"They thought they could silence a voice but all they did was turn up the volume!" (The martyrdom of Charlie Kirk, Turning Point USA)

Psalm 69:9  "for zeal for your house consumes me, and the insults of those who insult you fall on me."

Consumes: I feel so strongly about something that it completely dominates my life!

What is so appealing about His house?

1. Fellowship

  • Psalm 122:1  "I rejoiced with those who said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord.”
  • Hebrews 10:25  "not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching."
  • The day is fast approaching!
  • The devil knows his time is limited.
  • This is no time to be a lone ranger - we need each other!
  • Greater is He that is in us than he that is in the world!

2. The Word - Sound Doctrine

  • Proverbs 4:2  "I give you sound learning, so do not forsake my teaching."
  • 2 Timothy 1:13-14 "What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus. 14 Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us."
  • 2 Timothy 4:3  "For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear."

3. Worship

  • So many verses tell us to praise the Lord: Psalm 28:7, 40L3, 66:1-2, 96:1, 98:4, 9:1, 100:1-2, 147:7, 149:1, 150:6, Exodus 15:1, Isaiah 12:5, John 4:24, Acts 16:25
  • There is chain-breaking freedom in the songs we sing in worship to God!

4. His Presence

  • He was consumed with God's presence.
JesusAll GloriousPrepare in us Your templeWe're called as living stonesWhere You're enthroned
And as You rose from death in powerSo rise within our worshipRise upon our praiseAnd let the hands that saw You raisedClothe us in Your gloryAnd draw us by Your grace
Oh the gloryOf Your PresenceWe Your templeGive You reverence
So arise to Your restAnd be blessed by our praiseAnd as we glory in Your embraceAnd as Your presenceNow fills this place
  • Exodus 34: 29  "When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the covenant law in his hands, he was not aware that his face was radiant because he had spoken with the Lord."
  • Acts 4:13 "When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus."
  • There is something spectacular that happens to us when we spend time with the Lord!

Jeremiah 29:11-13 "For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart."

*We need to be all consumed - You will seek me and find me when you seek me with ALL of your heart!*

God has more for you - we need to be consumed - Fix our focus Him - it should completely dominate our lives!

Psalm 27

"The Lord is my light and my salvation—
    whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life—
    of whom shall I be afraid?

When the wicked advance against me
    to devour me,
it is my enemies and my foes
    who will stumble and fall.
Though an army besiege me,
    my heart will not fear;
though war break out against me,
    even then I will be confident.

One thing I ask from the Lord,
    this only do I seek:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
    all the days of my life,
to gaze on the beauty of the Lord
    and to seek him in his temple.
For in the day of trouble
    he will keep me safe in his dwelling;
he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent
    and set me high upon a rock.

Then my head will be exalted
    above the enemies who surround me;
at his sacred tent I will sacrifice with shouts of joy;
    I will sing and make music to the Lord.

Hear my voice when I call, Lord;
    be merciful to me and answer me.
My heart says of you, “Seek his face!”
    Your face, Lord, I will seek.
Do not hide your face from me,
    do not turn your servant away in anger;
    you have been my helper.
Do not reject me or forsake me,
    God my Savior.
10 Though my father and mother forsake me,
    the Lord will receive me.
11 Teach me your way, Lord;
    lead me in a straight path
    because of my oppressors.
12 Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes,
    for false witnesses rise up against me,
    spouting malicious accusations.

13 I remain confident of this:
    I will see the goodness of the Lord
    in the land of the living.
14 Wait for the Lord;
    be strong and take heart
    and wait for the Lord."

  • The Psalmist wanted nothing else but God! His full attention was on the Lord.
  • Beware of distractions - the enemy is so sly to steal our focus away from God...
  • Where is our gaze?  Our focus? What am I consumed by? What distracts me in life?
